The 8-Step Purchase Process

  1. Step 1: Determine your vehicle category. Check your vehicle registration document for the gross vehicle weight (GVW). If it is 3,500 kg or less, you need a standard vignette. Also check whether your vehicle has a trailer with its own licence plate.
  2. Step 2: Choose the vignette type. Decide between 10-day (€9.90), 2-month (€29.90) or annual (€96.40) based on your travel plans. Use the Selection Matrix if you are unsure.
  3. Step 3: Note your exact licence plate number. Write down your full plate number exactly as it appears on the vehicle, including the country code prefix (e.g., 'D' for Germany, 'A' for Austria).
  4. Step 4: Choose your start date. You can select today's date or any future date up to 30 days ahead. Make sure the start date matches your planned entry into Austria.
  5. Step 5: Visit the official ASFINAG purchase portal. Go to the official ASFINAG website (shop.asfinag.at) or an authorised reseller. Avoid third-party sites that are not officially authorised.
  6. Step 6: Enter your details and pay. Enter your licence plate number, country code, email address and payment details. Review the order summary carefully before confirming.
  7. Step 7: Receive and save your confirmation. You will receive a confirmation email within a few minutes. Save this email — it is your proof of purchase.
  8. Step 8: Drive on Austrian motorways. From your chosen start date, your vehicle is registered as authorised. Automated cameras at motorway entry points will verify your plate.

Complaints and Appeals

  1. Gather evidence: Purchase confirmation email, vehicle registration document, photos of your licence plate.
  2. Submit a written appeal to ASFINAG within 4 weeks of the fine notice.
  3. ASFINAG will respond within 6 weeks. If unsatisfied, you may escalate to the Austrian Federal Administrative Court.
  4. For consumer disputes, the Austrian Arbitration Board (Schlichtungsstelle) can mediate.
